At Least It’s Not A Woman Preaching, Right?
March 30, 2008
“And it came to pass, when he began to reign, as soon as he sat on his throne, that he slew all the house of Baasha: he left him not one that pisseth against a wall, neither of his kinsfolk, nor of his friends.”– 1 Kings 16:11
Nothing like a good old fashion sermon on men “who pisseth against the wall.” This dude can preach because he is a man, and by his own definition, to be a real man means pissing against the wall. So, that’s the difference between men and women! No wonder we can’t teach scripture, it’s all so clear now! :)
Did you guys know that urinals were divinely sanctioned? Who woulda thunk?
Really, could a woman do much worse than that dude?
Ok, this video is posted for strictly humorous purposes, and because I haven’t had a lot of time to work on more “meaty” posts. But I just want to make it clear that I DO NOT believe this bizarro-idea of “man-ness” is the crux of the complementarian argument or represents most complementarians in the least. In fact, I am hoping that this winner is the only one who thinks likes that. :)
But his mindset begs the question: Are our beliefs on “what makes a man a real man” distorted? Are our ideas of ideal masculinity shaped by scripture or by something like old western flicks, where men are gun-slinging, macho cowboys who pee in the wind and never shed a tear? Since the start of this series, the idea of gender roles and how they relate to or define our masculinity/femininity has consistently come up. So, I would like to know:
Which roles do you consider to be solely feminine and and solely masculine?
Which qualities do you consider to be solely female and solely male?
Or do you believe that most qualities are overlapping, but the ratio present within each sex should be distinct?
The reason I ask, is because I could not really pinpoint for myself inherent qualities (outside of the biological realm) that are solely male/female. I am sincerely curious of what the consensus is out there on this topic.

What a brilliant piece of exegesis! :) I laughed very hard when I first saw that video. It’s sad to see what passes for preaching in many churches.
I must say that I agree with your last paragraph. I can’t find any essential maleness or femaleness. There are some things that can be generalized to a certain degree, but there are thousands upon thousands of exceptions that make it impossible to postulate these things as essentially male or female. Maybe the idea of gender essentialism should be abandoned.

The thing is is that most people you talk to have an idea of the differences between men and women. Unless you really start thinking about it, then you realize that (aside from biological differences) there really aren’t any. But popular culture, media and (apparently) preachers all tell us that men should be tough and cold and women should be fragile and weepy. Telling people these things so much that they eventually believe it causes a lot of heartache when you find that (either man or woman) you don’t fit into what you’re “supposed to be.”
The thing is is that people of both sexes don’t fit into nice, neat little boxes. And we should really stop trying to put our world and our God in a box.

i’m having this same discussion on the ooze right now. how funny. i also think it is really difficult to discern what the differences between men and women really are.

Apart from obviously biological differences (yeah, I did suggest to my husband once that he could be pregnant with the next kid!!!)I don’t see how there can be absolutes. There can be tendencies, ie men are more x and women are more y, but these may or may not fit individuals. Surely, as redeemed children of the Father, our calling is to be fully what He made each one of us to be, without having to force ourselves into a stereotype. I actually believe that there is no sphere of life that doesn’t benefit from having both male and female input.

I might be misunderstanding the question, but it seems to me that, barring a lot of pressure from the politically correct, there are certain qualities that nearly all (notice I don’t say all) women possess in larger portion than men, and vice versa. Women tend to be better writers, I am not necessarily a better writer, but the average woman is better than the average man. Men tend to be better at math. Women tend to think with intuition and emotion, men with rationality. These differences have exceptions, but their general truths paint our society a particular way, and it seems possible that even if there are women who could be great ministers, the fact that most women wouldn’t creates a society where even they have to many burdens to overcome for God to want them to be. They have the capabilities, if only they were male, but the world is a certain way. This seems possible, not necessary, just possible, and I think we should interpret the scriptures keeping all possibilities in mind.
